Altered Memories is a series of reinterpreted moments used as an opportunity to influence a present narrative. The result is to put myself in a moment of time with some relatives I do not know and with some I know very well and to include myself as an additional observer and recorder in my family’s collective memories.
I am working with visual memories that were unsolicited and previously discarded. I am attracted to what has been left behind because it contains a certain truth that I am free to explore without a specific story. How do I imprint over an imprint? Taking photographs is a selective act. The idea behind Altered Memories is to create a personal archive of desired stories. I have digitized and manipulated my family’s 16mm and 8mm movies. I have chosen to select a time and place within the flow of images and then layer myself over an already existing truth. My effort becomes a new memory with new possibility. Isn’t that what art implies?
